‘Tech has an image problem’ WIC launches AI challenge to reshape the visual narrative

Women in ICT (WIC) is reshaping the visual narrative of the technology industry with its AI Image Equity Challenge.

The non-profit organisation, which advances women and girls in ICT, is inviting people to create AI generated images that spotlight and celebrate the untold stories of women in technology.

“Tech has an image problem, and we all know that you can’t be what you can’t see,” said WIC President Josephine Calabria.

“As AI continues to evolve, it’s essential that women aren’t just part of the conversation but leading it –especially when it comes to shaping how the technology is applied and understood.

“We’re introducing a fun, creative way to spark interest and encourage more women to get involved.”
The challenge aims to increase visibility, challenge stereotypes and equip women with the confidence and skills to thrive in AI

Prizes up for grabs include an Eizo FlexScan EV2460 monitor, valued at $560.

WIC board members will judge the entries, along with art and technology leaders, including multiple Walkley Award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster Tracey Spicer AM.

How it works:
  • Create an AI-generated image bringing to life the untold story of a woman or women in technology.
  • Ensure your submission is original and reflects the diverse reality of the technology industry. Representation is key!
  • Upload your artwork to Woobox for judging, along with a short narrative or 30-second video about the woman or women you chose to represent and why.
  • Disclose the prompts, AI tools, algorithms and source materials used.
  • Entries close on August 10. Winners will be notified in September and will receive prizes generously donated by our sponsors.
Entries will be judged on:
  • Representation and creativity (25%) – creative, diverse and empowering artistic interpretation of women in tech.
  • Impact and storytelling (25%) – engaging title and description with strong storytelling.
  • Technical execution and quality (25%) – clarity, composition and AI craftsmanship.
  • Ethical and responsible AI use (25%) – transparency and respect for intellectual property.

The challenge will prioritise ethical and responsible practices in AI-generated art, aligning with values of transparency, inclusivity and respect for intellectual property rights, with participants required to create original works that reflect the diversity in all its forms and empowerment of women and girls in technology, while adhering to copyright and legal standards.
